The Importance of Native Plants
Native plants play a vital role in our ecosystem. The currently alarming decline in the bird and insect populations has been directly linked to the overwhelming presence of non-native plants in our landscape, along with the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and loss of habitat. Even birds that are primarily seed-eating rely on insects to raise their young. The vast majority of insects are only adapted to feed on the native plants that they have co-evolved with for millions of years. Many non-native plants have become invasive, spreading into other areas and crowding out valuable species. Some are actually poisonous to birds and insects. To support biodiversity, use native plants!
